The Gear Behind Stunning Real Estate Photography & Videography

When it comes to real estate photography and video, the final results are only as good as the tools behind the lens. High-quality gear allows me to capture crisp, vibrant images and smooth, cinematic videos that showcase every property at its best. Here’s a look at the professional equipment I use for real estate media services:

Professional Camera Body

Sony A7IV

  • Sony A7 IV
This full-frame camera body is the foundation of my work. With incredible dynamic range, excellent low-light performance, and professional 4K video capabilities, the Sony A7 IV ensures every property shines—whether it’s a bright sunlit living room or a cozy twilight exterior.

Lenses for Real Estate Photography

Tamron 17-28mm f2.8

Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8

Sony FE 85mm f1.8

  • Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 (Wide-Angle Lens)
Wide-angle photography is essential for real estate. This lens captures spacious interiors while minimizing distortion, making every room feel open and inviting.

  • Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 (All-Purpose Lens)
Sharp and versatile, this lens is perfect for both wide room shots and tighter detail images. It highlights finishes, architectural features, and everything in between.

  • Sony 85mm f/1.8 (Portrait & Detail Lens)
Great for lifestyle-style listing photos or detail shots, this lens creates beautiful depth-of-field effects that bring warmth and personality to a home.

360° Virtual Tour Cameras

Insta 360 X4

Matterport Axis

  • Insta360 X4
For immersive 360° videos, the Insta360 captures dynamic perspectives that engage viewers online and give buyers a true sense of a property’s layout. Although it’s not currently supported on iOS, I purchased an inexpensive Android phone just to use with the matterport app as the Insta 360 x4 supports Android systems. Hopefully iOS will be supported one of these days…

  • Matterport Axis
This tool allows me to create interactive 3D virtual tours. Buyers can walk through a property at their own pace, making listings more engaging and informative. I’ve found that using an iPhone with the Axis (taking advantage of Lidar on iPhones) produces similar if not better results than the Insta 360 X4. It comes with a Matterport tripod, even though a bit flimsy, it gets the job done.

Drone Photography & Videography

  • DJI Drones
Drone photography and video are game-changers for real estate marketing. With DJI drones, I capture sweeping aerial views that showcase a property’s exterior, lot size, and neighborhood—adding a dramatic perspective that grabs attention. The DJI Flip has 48mpx resolution and shoots 4k 60fps video, it’s pretty great in all scenarios. I am testing the waters with fpv interior drones, I’ll keep you posted.

Odds and ends

  • Memory cards… I’ve been using sandisk without any issues so far, v90 for videos, v30 or v60 for photos. Another great feature of the a7IV is having dual card slots, it’s saving a lot of time if set to store videos on one card and photos on the other.

  • External Solid State Drives. I have a bunch of those, never had any issues with the samsung t7’s, they work great, super fast, I edit off of them constantly and then store everything on Lacie external HDD for backup.

  • ND filters. The Polar Pro filters are really great. They come with a pretty hefty price tag, though, think buying a few of these would reach the price of a lens... I have a few other ones I can recommend, namely K&F and Tiffen, never had any issues.

  • Tripod Head. the best one I’ve used and still using is the Benro GD3WH. Superb 3-axis head, saves you A LOT of time especially in this industry where you have to make sure verticals are straight etc. Especially good when you’re moving from carpeted room to hard floors, or anything in between, it’s a life saver being able to control the 3 axis with precision to get the best result out of the camera without having to adjust in post.

  • Tripod Legs. I have been using Smallrig and K&F tripod legs without any issues, the main thing I am looking for is quickly adjusting height, it’s a real time saver when on shoots.

  • Gimbal. I have been using DJI’s Ronin SC and Ronin S with great results. However, I recently switched to Feiyu Scorp 2 and I’m blown away. It can handle quite a heavy setup, balancing is easy, I have yet to play with the AI features but hoping they are as good as advertised.

  • Computer and editing software. I have been using macs for the past 20 years which makes it hard to switch to a different system. 2023 Macbook Pro 16in which runs like a dream for my needs, editing 4k 60fps footage in FinalCutProX without any lag. Lightroom Classic for photos, played around with other options such as Affinity’s Suite but still returning to Lightroom after a while :)

  • Pro Tip: the one piece of gear that surprisingly is one of the best purchases I have made is an Anker 6 port USB-C and USB-A (4, 2, respectively) fast charger. It’s a life saver when charging all my devices.
